The facade of this impressive architecturally sophisticated five bedroom villa is clad in locally quarried Table Mountain granite which is also used throughout to complement actual boulders and blasted portions of the foundation rock. Striking evidence of the use of the underlying stone is apparent when you enter the house to see the rockface literally be invited in from outside as the rock projects through the wide picture windows to be incorporated into a design feature. Here a spot-lit signature inventive wine cellar consists of a pattern of pidgeon-holes pock-marking the stone vault (a wine cooler cabinet increases capacity here). Dark jarrah wood stairs and finishes throughout lend the property a substantial though restful feel. The natural spring stream of the mountain can be seen within the house as well as feeding a soothing water feature and supplying the pool and jacuzzi. Other environmentally-driven imperatives include solar panelling and a rainwater reservoir tank. On this first floor an integrated sound system extends on to the balcony and sunlounger wooden deck. Sweeping vistas from the terrace here range from Lions Head and across the pine tree woods to Signal Hill to glimpes of the sentinel harbour cranes standing guard on this side of Table Bay. There is an occasional guest bedroom and kitchenette on this floor plus two guest bathrooms. The main living floor is reached by an attractive part-supended glass sheet and jarrah wood staircase. An orientally-inspired formal tranquility garden with seated buddha bordering a goldfish pond watered from above lies behind a large glass screen. This focal point is attractively lit at night. To one side of a stone real fireplace there is a formal lounge with light brown suite and dining area (with an imaginative Italian globe lighting fixture) while the open-plan kitchen and informal living room area is across the landing. A balcony of extensive decking and garden furniture is accessed by patio doors running the full length of the house and incorporates a barbecue station with stone flue. This living area has a white pebble-bed gas flame fireplace and wide-screen television while a large L-shaped taupe couch centred around an interesting Balinese-style glass-topped coffee table catches the eye. Gauguin and Matisse-style pictures are hung. The proximity to the generously proportioned kitchen makes this an ideal entertaining venue. There is also a guest bathroom here. The full-specification AEG appliances kitchen (including integrated coffee-maker, ice-dispensor and double oven with gas hobs) consists of a long island counter and pale blue finished cabinets and effectively extends to a separate scullery utility. (An outside utility room houses the laundry machines together with a further fridge-freezer). This overlooks a garden of indigenous lilies and mature trees from which an owl has been known to hoot! Three elegantly slender tall glass vases decorate the kitchen counter being typical of the tastefully refined decor and furnishing.
The master suite with walk-through wardrobes is on the second floor and has an adjacent secluded deck and private rooftop garden with irises. The overview from here is exalted. The en suite bathroom features a large concrete tub filled by a broad waterfall-effect tap. Garland swirls decorate the wall while star cluster lighting is featured in the ceiling. Rectangular mirrors complement wide oblong caesar stone washbasins. A chaise longe couch affords fine views in this serene and restful space.
Another en suite guest bedroom on the third floor with balcony is situated by a restful water feature diverted stream that feeds the pond below; there is a herb garden to the rear. From the balcony here the substrate rock again thrusts through to the garden. At the other end of the landing is an office study room with views of Lions Head (brown organza curtains dress the windows) with a further striking bathroom up steps on a mezzanine floor. Like all bathrooms, it has underfloor heating and here a travertine tiled beige shower area. Caesar stone basin finishes are complemented by a large freestanding oval white stone bathtub. The atmosphere created is one of tranquil repose.
