Sir Lowrys Village Somerset West

It is difficult to picture a more perfect destination than a magnificent thatch house that feels like part of the landscape situated in the picturesque Hottentots Holland and Helderberg Mountains looking out over patchwork fields, huge expanses of beach and lush green exotic flora. The beautiful thatch roof offers a beguilingly charming appeal also providing excellent insulation, slatted door and window shutters give the house a minimal look and work well regulating the amount of natural light.

This luxurious tempting home shows how a traditional sense of comfort can be incorporated into a modern spacious interior with a careful blend of modern and traditional materials. The colours of wood and thatch are complemented by rich toned rustic rugs on the tiles bringing warmth and glamour to this house. The dark wood gives a more colonial look while the overall scheme of soothing desert tones without clutter dominate the interior creating a restful nature and harmonising with the natural environment. The décor is grand but also avoids being too pompous and, above all, is extremely comfortable by combining a love of space with African treasures, framed prints and sculptures. Practical aspects as spot lights, under floor and swimming pool heating allow occupants to take centre stage. The high thatch roof, large windows and floor to ceiling glass sliding doors all around the house embrace open plan living making the most of the natural light allowing you to fling open the doors and let the mountain air drift through.

Living area

As you enter, through glass sliding doors, a tiled foyer with tranquil ponds on either side, you are met by an almost super natural clarity of a view with cascading meadows, immense mountain and endless beach. Immediately left of the foyer is a large, well-lit study with two solid wood desks, black leather chairs and plenty cupboard space with Internet access. Directly ahead is an open planned living room to the left and sitting room to the right with beige painted walls. The living room has a large wall television with a useful wooden cabinet beneath, an L-shaped beige suede six seater sofa, two brown and round wicker chairs and long windows over looking the indigenous front entrance. The sitting room has a dark brown weaved leather sofa, two matching chairs and two comfortable round chairs all with fitted suede cushions, a dark wood coffee table, handsome cabinet and a welcoming fireplace. Large glass sliding doors open on to a superb pool deck. Left of the living room is a dining area with four wooden tables and chairs upholstered in orange and yellow fabric, a large dark wood cabinet and a lit food preparation area with cupboards below. A fully equipped neutral and spacious kitchen off the dining area has plenty cream fitted cupboards, marble work surfaces and a central work block providing the openness of the kitchen. Large windows overlook African plants out front and rocky mountains at the back. Down a few steps is a pantry and two en suite bedrooms.

Bedrooms one and two have a king size bed with white linen and an upholstered seat at the bottom, two comfortable round chairs, two coffee tables, a full height wooden cabinet with a fitted porcelain sink and a wall television. One can open glass sliding doors and large windows in the mornings to catch a glimpse of the spectacular view. The en suite bathrooms are of superb quality with fittings that are practical and timeless. A double-bowled vanity area has cupboards and drawers below, the oval shaped bathtub is raised, a wooden wardrobe, a glass shower and lovely big windows all around. Up the tiled stairs to the left of the foyer is a spacious fully equipped kitchen with identical decor to the downstairs kitchen, a sitting room with two floral upholstered sofas, a comfortable chair, glass top coffee table and a charming fireplace. This room has a curved tiled balcony that is all about peace and quiet and taking a leisurely breakfast outside. A guest loo is to the left through wooden slatted doors and a sunny en suite bedroom is to the right boasting a king size wooden bed with white linen, two red suede square chairs and an upholstered chair where you can immense yourself in luxury with nothing but breathtaking views of mountain and sea. The large en suite bathroom has a stone tiled vanity area with his and her round stone basins, a glass shower and doors opening on to the balcony.

Outdoor Area

This area has a magic all of its own. An enchanting patio with a sheltered curved bamboo roof all along the back of the house is on the first level with wall lanterns which are crucial to the long dark evenings and, as daylight fades, for al fresco dining and entertainment under the stars perhaps. There are two elegant tables and chairs, four slatted wooden chairs and six matching loungers. A smaller tiled pool is on the first level and a good length swimming pool is positioned on the wooden deck below surrounded by little tranquil square spotlights. All in all, this house is simply beautiful with every inch a paradise.
